Classic Scones

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Optional add-ins: 1 cup of raisins, currants, chocolate chips, or dried fruit

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Mix the Dry Ingredients:

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

3. Add Cold Butter:

Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingertips, work the butter into the dry mixture until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some larger pea-sized pieces of butter.

4. Prepare Wet Ingredients:

In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole milk, egg, and vanilla extract.

5. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures:

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. If you’re adding any optional mix-ins, gently fold them into the dough.

6. Shape the Dough:

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat it into a 1-inch thick circle.

7. Cut Out Scones:

Using a round biscuit cutter (about 2-3 inches in diameter), cut out scones from the dough. Press straight down without twisting the cutter to ensure even rising.

8. Re-Shape and Cut:

Gather any remaining dough scraps, pat them together, and cut out additional scones. Repeat until you’ve used up all the dough.

9. Bake:

Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet. If desired, brush the tops with a little extra milk for a golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and have risen.

10. Cool and Enjoy:

Let the scones cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. Serve them warm with clotted cream, butter, jam, or your favorite topping.

These homemade scones are perfect for a breakfast or afternoon tea treat. Enjoy them with a cup of tea or coffee for a delightful experience!
